What is polylactic acid PLA fiber (corn fiber)?
1.The origin of polylactic acid fiber
Polylactic acid is a biomass material made by fermenting starch or sugar with bacteria into lactic acid, and then dehydrating and polymerizing it. Polylactic acid fiber is made from polylactic acid slices using a certain spinning method. Because corn and other grains are mostly used as raw materials, it is also called "corn fiber". Corn fiber raw material comes from nature and can be completely degraded into H2O and CO2, realizing natural circulation. It is a fiber material with great development prospects in the 21st century.
2.The benefits of polylactic acid fiber
Biomass fiber, biodegradable. PLA fiber has good biodegradability and completely decomposes into CO2 and H2O in nature after being discarded. Through photosynthesis, the two turn into starch, the raw material of lactic acid.
Lightweight, natural and gentle touch and silky luster. The density of PLA is 1.25g/cm3, which is a lightweight fiber. It dries quickly even when wet with water, without feeling sticky or heavy. The Young's modulus of PLA is between polyester and nylon. It feels harder than nylon and softer than polyester. PLA has a low refractive index and has an elegant luster like silk.
Moisture absorption, quick drying, warmth retention and anti-pilling properties. PLA fiber can perform different functions according to different seasons. In winter, the thermal insulation performance is more than 20% higher than that of cotton and polyester fiber, and the thermal insulation performance is 1.8 times greater than that of high-quality cotton core. In summer, it has excellent moisture permeability and water diffusivity, absorbs sweat and dries quickly, and can quickly take away body heat through evaporation. PLA fabric has good anti-pilling properties.
Naturally flame-retardant, antibacterial and mildly acidic that reassures the skin. Polylactic acid fiber is not easy to burn and has a higher oxygen limiting index than polyester and nylon. Corn fiber itself forms a natural and stable antibacterial environment on its surface without processing. The PH value on the surface of PLA fiber is between 6 and 6.5, which is weakly acidic, and healthy skin is also weakly acidic. It has good compatibility with the skin. The antibacterial effect of polylactic acid fiber is obvious, and the elimination rate against Staphylococcus aureus, Candida albicans, and Escherichia coli is greater than 98%. It inhibits mites, and the test data shows that the anti-mite performance inhibition rate is 71.39%, which has an anti-mite effect.
Good resilience, strong fluffiness, smooth feel, quick drying, and UV resistance. PLA fiber and its fabrics do not absorb ultraviolet rays, and their strength and elongation have little effect under long-term exposure to ultraviolet rays.
